The Return of Eastern Black Rhinos to Loisaba

In early 2024, Loisaba Conservancy became home to black rhinos for the first time in over 50 years. In partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service and with critical support from San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and The Nature Conservancy, 21 critically endangered eastern black rhinos were successfully translocated from Ol Pejeta, Lewa, and Nairobi National Park. This milestone marked Loisaba as Kenya’s 17th officially designated rhino sanctuary. 

The return of these iconic animals is a major conservation achievement—and a symbol of what long-term planning, community support, and secure habitats can accomplish. The expansive 45,000-acre rhino sanctuary within Loisaba offers ideal conditions for breeding and long-term population growth. Enhanced security, habitat management, and post-release monitoring ensure the rhinos’ wellbeing as they settle into their new environment. By February 2025, the population had already grown with the birth of two calves—proof that the sanctuary is functioning successfully and that a new generation is taking root. 

The rhino reintroduction has also strengthened community conservation. Neighbouring communities were involved in the planning process and continue to benefit through employment, education outreach, and improved security. It’s a powerful example of conservation that protects wildlife while uplifting people. 

This return is more than a milestone—it’s a commitment. A commitment to restoring ecosystems, protecting endangered species, and ensuring that Kenya remains a stronghold for rhinos long into the future.

The Need for Black Rhino Conservation 

The black rhino is classified as critically endangered by the IUCN, and Kenya is home to a significant portion of the remaining eastern black rhino population. The National Black Rhino Action Plan has set an ambitious target to establish a metapopulation of 2,000 rhinos in Kenya to ensure the species' long-term survival. Loisaba's rhino sanctuary plays a vital role in this vision by providing additional space for population expansion, critical for maintaining the desired growth rate of at least 5% per year.

We use a combination of technology and trained personnel to monitor and protect our rhinos. This includes the use of GPS collars, camera traps, and EarthRanger software to track their movements and health. We also conduct regular patrols and collaborate with the Kenya Wildlife Service to maintain high security standards against poaching.
