Code of Conduct

1. General Conduct
a) Walking on Loisaba Conservancy is prohibited, unless guided by an authorised, armed guide with appropriate knowledge of walking with ‘dangerous game’. By walking without such an armed guide guests accept all such risks and personally accept all liability.
b) Wildlife always has right of way. Do not chase, follow or harass animals.
c) Do not light fires, except those controlled by lodge staff and/or management or at the designated area at the campsite.
d) Do not discard litter or cigarette butts anywhere other than in a designated bin.
e) Be quiet and considerate when viewing wildlife (including no loud music) and keep a sensible distance away.
f) Spotlights can be disturbing to wildlife so use them sensible and responsible. Do not shine directly into eyes for any length of time. Red filters are compulsory and white lights are strictly forbidden.
g) Do not damage or remove any flora, fauna, stones or bones.
h) No firearms, spears, or bows and arrows of any kind are to be carried on the Conservancy without the specific knowledge of the Security Manager and CEO.
i) Collection of firewood is prohibited. Firewood will be provided at the designated camp site.
j) Report any concerns or violations of this Code to any senior Loisaba Conservancy staff.
k) Never feed wildlife. It will lead to unnecessary dependence and possibly result in eventual harm to the animal. Loisaba Conservancy management may operate wildlife feeding programmes from time to time, generally under drought conditions.
l) No use of private drones unless authorised.

 

2. Vehicles
a) Observe the strict speed limit of maximum 40 kph.
b) Any game drives within Loisaba Conservancy are to be conducted with/by authorised individuals only.
c) Game drive vehicles carrying Loisaba Conservancy paying guests have right of way and management/resident vehicles shall be considerate in this respect.
d) Game viewing vehicles should pull off to the side of the road/track whilst game viewing.
e) Wildlife surrounded by vehicles is unpleasant and can cause distress to the animals. A strict maximum of three vehicles viewing an animal at any one time is to be maintained. Be considerate of other vehicles waiting to view wildlife, and avoid monopolisation.
f) “Off road” driving is strictly prohibited (unless approved by management or by an official guide in a Loisaba Game Drive Vehicle). Keep to designated roads or tracks.
g) Unless game has approached the vehicle, the distance that a vehicle should keep from game is a minimum 20 metres.
h) Only 4x4 vehicles which are shades of green or brown in colour are permitted on Loisaba Conservancy. Saloon 4x4 vehicles and mini-buses are prohibited. Exceptions to this may be authorised by Loisaba Conservancy Management. (Vehicles owned by individuals with roaming rites are permitted.)
i) Sitting or standing on vehicle roofs is strictly prohibited.
j) Driving on the conservancy after 7pm is strictly prohibited (unless approved by management).
k) Motorcycles are not permitted on the Conservancy (including boda boda taxis), unless with authorisation from the Security Manager or CEO.


3. Safety
a) Only walk away from your lodge / camp / vehicle in the company of a guide armed with a rifle of at least .762 / .308 calibre and who is authorised by the Security Manager or CEO and competent in handling “dangerous game”.
b) Armed guides must have valid firearms license for the appropriate weapon.
c) Running for exercise is only permitted on the Conservancy on the designated running tracks.


4. Camping
a) Camping on Loisaba Conservancy is restricted to the designated campsite, unless with authorisation from the CEO.
b) Loisaba Conservancy will provide a ranger at the campsite when in use.
c) Campers must remove all waste.


5. Visitors to Neighbouring Communities
a) Through traffic must proceed directly along the public access roads to these communities.
b) If you would like to photograph people, please ask their permission first.
c) It is recommended that sweets or money are not given to children - it encourages begging and is demeaning.
d) Ideally a Loisaba staff member or tourism partner accompanies each village visit to ensure best conduct and practices are used.


6. Traversing
a) Pedestrian traffic, not including guided tourists / visitors, will be kept to a minimum within Loisaba.
b) No pedestrian movement within Loisaba will be allowed at night between 1800 and 0700 hrs.


7. Aviation
a) No aircraft will be operated within the vicinity of tourist camps or lodges, unless under exceptional circumstances.
b) No aircraft will operate below 1,500 ft. AGL overhead the Conservancy except during approach for landing, take off, for management purposes or under exceptional circumstances.
c) Helicopters will take the shortest and quickest route into and out of pick up points within Loisaba, attaining a minimum altitude of 1,500ft AGL as soon as possible.


Please respect our Code of Conduct and our rangers, who are there to ensure the protection of the wildlife and the environment. In order to maintain prime wildlife habitat and a pleasant experience for all, Loisaba Conservancy reserves the right to grant access and may require anyone perceived to be causing a disturbance or damage to the environment to leave the Conservancy. Rangers and Oryx Ltd (Loisaba Conservancy) management have the legal right to:


• Impose a fine of Ksh 10,000 per person for anyone caught breaking the code of conduct
• Have a vehicle and/or people removed from the Conservancy immediately
• Have a vehicle and/or people banned from the Conservancy
