Each rhino at Loisaba is protected 24/7 by ranger patrols, aerial surveillance, habitat maintenance, veterinary support, anti-poaching patrols, community outreach partnerships, and advanced monitoring technology. It currently costs $30,000 per year to keep just one rhino safe.

Ekwang

Ekwang is one of the eastern black rhinos reintroduced to Loisaba in early 2024 and has settled confidently into his new home. Calm and self-assured, he has quickly established himself on the landscape, showing strong natural behaviours and a clear sense of independence.

Often seen browsing and exploring, Ekwang embodies the resilience of this critically endangered species and the promise of their return to Loisaba.

By adopting Ekwang, you help secure a safe future for rhinos like him and support the long-term recovery of eastern black rhinos in northern Kenya.

Zulu

Zulu is a young eastern black rhino with a big personality and an unusually strong friendship. He is well known at Loisaba for his close bond with Safiya. While black rhinos are typically solitary animals, Zulu and Safiya are almost always seen together—an inseparable duo exploring the sanctuary side by side.

Still a sub-adult, Zulu offers a rare glimpse into the playful, curious nature of young rhinos as they settle into their new home. His confidence and sociable streak make him a favourite among the monitoring teams, and his presence is already helping shape the future of Loisaba’s black rhino population.

By adopting Zulu, you directly support 24/7 ranger patrols, monitoring, habitat management, and the long-term protection of eastern black rhinos—helping ensure Zulu thrives for decades to come.

Safiya

Safiya is a young female eastern black rhino with a calm presence and a strong sense of companionship. Rarely seen without Zulu by her side, she forms part of one of Loisaba’s most distinctive rhino pairings. Despite their species’ solitary nature, Safiya’s close bond with Zulu highlights the individuality and adaptability of these remarkable animals.

As a sub-adult, Safiya is still learning the rhythms of her landscape—browsing, exploring, and gradually carving out her place within the sanctuary. Her steady temperament and curiosity make her a joy to observe and an important part of Loisaba’s growing black rhino population.

By adopting Safiya, you are helping safeguard her future through anti-poaching patrols, aerial and ground monitoring, habitat protection, and dedicated veterinary and ranger support—ensuring she can one day contribute to the recovery of this critically endangered species.

Ushindi

Ushindi is a resilient female eastern black rhino who was introduced to Loisaba in January 2024 from Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Shortly after her arrival, she survived a challenging encounter with lions—an early test that she overcame with remarkable strength, making a full recovery and settling confidently into her new home.

Since then, Ushindi has continued to thrive and is regularly seen moving calmly through the conservancy, often in the company of a male rhino, Antonio. Her steady presence and adaptability reflect both her own resilience and the safe, protected environment at Loisaba.
