The Importance of Tourism in Conservation
Tourism at Loisaba funds nearly half of its conservation budget. Fees support wildlife security, community education, healthcare, and operations. COVID-19 closures have cut this income, risking vital programs. Guests can help protect wildlife, support local communities, and maintain zero poaching by donating—every bit makes a difference.

Baotree – Engaging Communities in Conservation
Baotree, a new coexistence model trialed at Loisaba, rewards local communities with “bao-points” for conservation tasks like lion sightings or predator-proofing bomas. These points fund community goals, such as healthcare and livestock protection. The successful pilot highlights how empowering communities fosters wildlife protection and sustainable coexistence.

Loisaba’s ‘BioBins’ – Hyenas and Vultures
Loisaba turns waste into energy using a BioDigester and Community Cooker—mirroring nature’s scavengers like hyenas and vultures, which clean ecosystems by consuming carrion. Vultures are critical, yet endangered, with six species at Loisaba. To combat poisoning, Loisaba supports coexistence training with Lion Landscapes and The Peregrine Fund to protect both wildlife and communities.

The Community Cooker
At Loisaba Conservancy, waste is sorted and used sustainably via a BioDigester and the innovative Community Cooker. Invented in Kenya, the Cooker safely burns rubbish at high temperatures to produce energy for cooking—helping reduce plastic waste, protect health, and save trees. Nearly all waste at Loisaba now becomes fuel or compost, supporting a cleaner environment and local communities.

How Removing an Invasive Cactus Species is Helping to Provide Meals for Our Security Team
Prickly pear cactus, introduced to Loisaba in the 1970s, has become an invasive threat. With support from The Nature Conservancy, Loisaba now uses a JCB backhoe and a BioDigester to remove and convert the cactus into eco-friendly fuel. This dual solution helps restore habitats, reduce firewood use, and promote sustainability across the conservancy.
