Community

Goal 1: Improve the wellbeing of communities that neighbour Loisaba

At the heart of Loisaba Conservancy’s success lies the pivotal connection with our neighbouring communities. Over the years, Loisaba has remained committed to improving the well-being of these communities through collaboration built on mutual respect and shared goals. This partnership has led to meaningful progress in healthcare, education, security, and access to clean water for residents in the surrounding areas.

Our dedicated Community Programme Manager plays a central role, working closely with community members to identify and address the most pressing and critical issues. This dynamic engagement not only ensures that the conservancy’s initiatives are closely aligned with the actual needs of the local populations but also empowers these communities to take an active role in shaping their future. By investing in healthcare, education, and sustainable water resources, Loisaba has not only safeguarded the ecological balance of the region but has also uplifted the quality of life for countless individuals living on its periphery. This close-knit partnership stands as a testament to the conservancy’s commitment to environmental conservation and community well-being working hand in hand, driving positive change for both the land and its people.

Community Education Programme

Loisaba Conservancy’s Community Education Programme supports students in primary, secondary, and tertiary education through scholarships, mentoring, and school infrastructure and operational support. By partnering with schools in the surrounding communities and collaborating with other educational organisations, we aim to improve access to quality education and enhance student performance, facilitating smoother transitions from primary to tertiary education.

Regular surveys and meetings with community members consistently highlight the high value placed on education support, particularly school infrastructure development, scholarships, and feeding programmes. In response to this ongoing feedback, Loisaba continues to invest in improving school facilities, while also providing operational support such as daily school meals, internet access, maintenance, and staff assistance—ensuring a safe, inclusive, and effective learning environment for students across the region.

Community Health Programme

Access to Healthcare Services

Loisaba Conservancy’s Community Health Programme aims to enhance healthcare access and awareness for neighbouring communities through monthly outreach clinics, home visits, and emergency response services. By connecting community members with healthcare facilities and providing direct support, we address the region's healthcare needs, improving overall health outcomes.

Health Awareness and Education

Our health education initiatives empower individuals to make informed health decisions, focusing on topics such as reproductive health, nutrition, family planning, and sanitation. Through school health clubs and community workshops, we tackle critical issues like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by promoting alternative rites of passage and practical skills training for girls.

Environmental Health and Drought Support

Loisaba supports environmental health through borehole maintenance and sanitation initiatives, ensuring access to clean water. During droughts, we assist local communities with relief grazing for livestock, veterinary care, and food package donations, helping to mitigate the impacts of harsh conditions on both livelihoods and health.

Community Livelihood Programme

Loisaba Conservancy is committed to supporting the livelihoods of surrounding communities by providing employment, revenue opportunities, and capacity-building initiatives. By creating over 500 jobs and facilitating community cattle sales and cultural tourism, we help local communities benefit directly from conservation efforts.

Employment and Revenue Opportunities

We focus on the establishment and growth of community-based enterprises, emphasising sustainability and economic growth. This includes cattle fattening and livestock-to-market schemes, as well as increasing tourism-related revenue through cultural boma visits, which provide local communities with financial benefits and preserve cultural heritage.

Support for Women’s Groups

Through the ‘Chui Mamas’ Community Based Organisation, we empower women from pastoralist communities, particularly widows, single mothers, and those living with disabilities. The group engages in activities like tailoring, beekeeping, and soap making, alongside sexual health education. With over 600 members, we provide training in practical skills, business management, and financial literacy, as well as support with infrastructure and resources to enhance their economic independence and community development.
